Meet Our Students

St. Thomas is a clear choice for students seeking to expand their perspectives of the world, and who want to be active participants in their own education.  Hear more about what our students have to say about their experiences at St. Thomas…

St. Thomas is teaching Lauren to play to win — on the court and in life.

Lauren Hamilton, Psychology/Sociology ’11, Lowell, Massachusetts

“It’s a dream come true for me to play volleyball at the collegiate level. Being on the team has opened up great opportunities for me. I have been an athlete of the month and most improved player. Most importantly, our team also volunteered at a nearby school teaching volleyball to young students and starting a literacy program called “Read to Succeed.”

Being from a large city, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to go to a school that was in the middle of nowhere. I needed to be in a place where there are still plenty of things to do. Fredericton is a fun city without all the traffic and rushing about. It is a very relaxed atmosphere, and very safe. After my degree at STU, I will attend graduate school for child development and family therapy.”

Chelsea Mooney, Spanish/Journalism '09, Bangor, Maine

St. Thomas gave Chelsea the confidence to follow her dream – from Maine to Spain.

“I arrived in New Brunswick without knowing a single person, but that didn’t stop me from making friends. I lived on campus and always felt welcomed. Now I have friends in all corners of the world. My decision to become as active as I could in the STU community paid off. I was involved in the World University Service of Canada, and every week we sold Fair Trade products with all the proceeds going to Bikes for AIDS, a program where bicycles are purchased and assembled in Malawi and used as ambulances. I joined other students for a six-week language learning program in Avila, Spain during the summer. It’s because of this trip that I decided I wanted to go to Spain to live and teach after graduating. My professor helped me overcome confidence issues regarding my Spanish speaking skills. I wouldn’t be using the language as well as I am now if he hadn’t recognized my individual situation and helped me along.”

Diversity of experience and relationships is giving Zach much more than a degree.

Zachary Mazurkiewicz, BA’11, Psychology and Fine Arts, Buffalo, New York

“I am on track to graduate in 2011 and ready to start my fourth and final season as a winger with the men’s soccer Tommies. I am also helping to coach junior varsity boys’ volleyball in my spare time and I play guitar in a local band. Everyone that I meet at STU is motivated and serious about what they want to do. We have all been successful here. In class, professors focus more on what your reactions and thoughts are, rather than on memorizing facts. This way of fully looking at situations and analyzing problems has definitely affected how I deal with things out in the world.

Because of the small class sizes, the professors, and the campus environment, people can accomplish what they set out to do here. I want to take time to travel after my degree to build on the diversity of experiences and relationships my STU degree has given me.”
