A true college town

Soon after you arrive, you will feel at home at St. Thomas. Our residence halls each have their own identity, yet everyone feels part of one community. Dining halls are places for gathering with friends. Our campus is a short distance away from the center of Fredericton, filled with cafés, markets, and shops where students and all members of the campus community can relax and enjoy downtime. We share our hilltop with the University of New Brunswick. Together we bring life to a fun, friendly, and safe college town. Take a look at the Fredericton, New Brunswick link at right and you’ll see what we mean.

STU Students Slammed by Poetry

It’s a regular morning in Sir James Dunn Hall cafeteria. Students are rushing to Tim Horton’s to get their coffee before class, scouring textbooks, and typing the last paragraph of their term paper. The usual chatter of the cafeteria is suddenly interrupted by the sound of a loud guitar strum. Everyone shifts their attention to English Professor Andrew Titus, who is standing on a chair screaming—it’s a poetry slam.

As Professor Titus finishes his poem, a young man seems to come from nowhere. He also starts reciting poetry to a beat set by the guitar. When he finishes, a girl stands up and the guitar takes on a quieter tune.

These random acts of poetry hush the cafeteria’s commotion as everyone looks to see where the next poet will come from.

One student delivers his poem from a table top, while another girl leans against a wall and grins as she recites hers. The guitar playing then stops and a different person begins playing a different guitar in the crowd.

It’s quiet for moment. Titus begins snapping his fingers and walking around the crowd. People from all corners of the room join in on the snapping as Titus finishes off the slam.

The people in Sir James Dunn Hall are smiling, applauding, and going back to their morning.

Events at STU and around the community could get slammed by Professor Titus and crew at any moment. The upcoming WinterFest, STU Revue and student fundraisers are all likely targets…
